The word ‘vernalization’ was first introduced through a Russian scientist T.D. Lysenko in the year 1920. Several species, particularly biennials and perennials are made to flower at low temperature range of 1oC to 10oC. This is termed as vernalization.

The response to the cold temperature stimulus is not consistent in each plant. Plants that are vernalized, are known as inductive types. Those nonvernalized are known as noninductive types.

Techniques of vernalization:

To induce vernalization the following are the steps to be in use. Seeds are permitted to germinate and subjected to cold treatment for changeable period of time depending upon the species. After that treatment germinated seeds are permitted to dry for some time and then sown.

Devernalization:

Opposite of the influences of vernalization is known as Devernalization. Subjecting the plants to higher temperature later than a cold treatment brings about devernalization.
