Double fertilization is found to be worldwide occurrence among angiosperms. It should take place in the ovule for the setting of viable seeds. The importance of double fertilization is as follows:
A. In angiosperms, the growth of the embryo sac (i.e., female gametophyte) stops at 8 nucleate or 7 celled phases. The fusion of second male gamete with the polar nuclei or secondary nucleus, gives stimulus to one of its cells to resume growth and form the endosperm or nutritive tissue.
B. Double fertilization makes sure that the nutritive tissue or endosperm is formed only whenever the formation of embryo has been verified by the fertilization of egg. When fertilization fails due to certain reason, no endosperm will be build up.
Thus no energy of the plant will be wasted on this account in angiosperms.
C. It gives characteristics tonutritive tissue termed as endosperm.
