The simple squamous epithelium is made up of a single layer of flat (or squamous) cells. The stratified squamous epithelium is made up of similar kind of flat cells positioned in several superimposed layers. The simple squamous epithelium is found in pulmonary alveoli. The stratified squamous epithelium can be found in moist mucosae, such as the mucosae of the mouth, vagina and esophagus, and it is the epithelium of skin.
