Main cells of connective tissue proper are fibroblasts, cells which excrete intercellular materials. These cells are majority of cells of tissue. Fibroblasts are later transformed to the fibrocytes, mature cells with restricted secretory role. Intercellular substance that fills the interstice is known as interstitial matrix, or just the matrix.
