Expert
The growth tissues of plants are meristems. Meristems are tissues which produce plant growth giving birth to all other tissues; they are formed of undifferentiated cells holding intense cell division rate. Meristems categorize as primary meristems and as secondary meristems.
Primary meristems are found in apex of the stem, in lateral buds of the stem, in basis and tips of shoots and in root cap. Primary meristems are liable for primary growth (lengthening) of plant.
Secondary meristems are those which make plant grow in thickness (secondary growth) and they are formed by the tissues that thicken stem: phellogen and cambium (cork cambium).
