MAC versus IP Addressing: Since MAC addressing works at data link layer, IP addressing executes at the network layer (layer 3). It is a slight oversimplification, save for one can think of IP addressing as supporting software implementation and MAC addresses as supporting the hardware implementation of network stack. The MAC address usually remains fixed and obeys the network device; however the IP address modifies as the network device shifts from one network to other.
