The myelin sheath performs the function of improving safety and speed of the neural impulse transmission all along the axon. Myelin sheath also serves as an electrical insulator avoiding the dispersion of impulse to another adjacent structures. As, the myelin sheath has gaps known as Ranviers’ nodes in its length, neural impulse jumps from one node to the other hence, increasing the speed of neural transmission. Not all the neurons have the myelin sheath. There are generally, the myelinated axonal fibers and unmyelinated ones.
