Major problems of diabetes mellitus for sugar restriction
For what reason diabetic patients often undergo dietary sugar restriction? What are the major problems of diabetes mellitus?
Expert
Diabetic patients are usually advised to consume less carbohydrates because these substances are degraded into glucose and this particle is absorbed in the intestines. The dietary sugar restraint objective is to control glycemia to preserve it at normal levels.
The major problems of diabetes are tissue injuries that takes place in different organs caused by the chronic increased blood osmolarity: in the tangential nerves (diabetic neuropathy), consequential in sensitivity loss, increased injurys (the person does not sense that the tissue is being wounded and the injury expands) and muscle fatigue; in the kidneys (diabetic nephropathy), causing glomerular lesions that can lead to renal failure; in the retina (diabetic retinopathy), leading to visualization impairment and blindness; in the skin, as a result of the neuropathy. Diabetes mellitus too is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases e.g. embolism, stroke and myocardial infarction.
