Define the term mitosis

Define the term mitosis? Also state the significance of mitosis?

Mitosis is the procedure in which one eukaryotic cell splits into two cells similar to the parent cell (usually similar, as alterations in genetic material can take place, more or less organelles might be distributed among the daughter cells and so on).

Mitosis is basic for asexual reproduction of eukaryotes, for the embryonic growth, for the growth of pluricellular beings and for the tissue renewal.
