Mitochondria are the organelles in which the most significant portion of the cellular respiration takes place: the ATP production.

Mitochondria are organelles delimited by the two lipid membranes. The inner membrane invaginates to the internal of the organelle making cristae which delimitate the interior space termed as mitochondrial matrix and where mitochondrial DNA (or mtDNA), mitochondrial RNA (or mt RNA), mitochondrial ribosome and respiratory enzymes can be found. The Mitochondria are many in eukaryotic cells and they are even richer in such cells that employ more energy, similar to muscle cells. Since they have their own RNA, DNA, and ribosome, mitochondria can self-replicate.
