In the crustaceans there are species with the direct and others with the indirect growth. In the insects there are species with no larval stage (or ametabolic insects), others undergoing indirect growth starting with an egg stage followed by the nymph stage (or hemimetabolic insects) and others with indirect growth starting with the larval stage (or holometabolic insects).
Transformation of a larva in an adult individual is named as metamorphosis. Hemimetabolic insects undergo unfinished metamorphosis while holometabolic insects undergo complete metamorphosis.
