The main cells which form the phloem are the sieve elements and the companion cells. The sieve elements make the vessel walls; they are considered as living enucleated cells located in the series making the sieve tubes. Between the successive vessels elements there exist communicating pores. The companion cells are situated outside and alongside the sieve tubes and they help within the absorption of material to be transported.
