Study the Map 2.1, "The World in the Third Millennium BCE." Compare and contrast the regions where food production from tilling the soil emerged and those where food production from pastoralism (herding) emerged. Considering the geographical features highlighted on this map, why do you think cities appeared in the regions that they did? How did geographical and environmental factors promote interaction between nomadic pastoral and sedentary agricultural societies?
