Problem: After reading the attached story, write a reaction to the story. What would you do as a citizen of Omelas? Why? What would a good utilitarian do? Are utilitarian values morally defensible, if this situation can occur as a result of their theory?
If so, how would you defend them? If not, why shouldn't we seek to benefit the majority at the expense of the minority? Is one individual's suffering worth more than an entire community's happiness? Support your claims with evidence and good reasons.
