Magnetic Properties:
The magnetic properties of a substance are established by the number of unpaired electrons in it. There are two main kinds of substances.
1) Paramagnetic substances:
The paramagnetic character occurs since of the presence of unpaired electrons. Paramagnetic substances are the substances that are attracted by magnetic field.
2) Diamagnetic Substances:
Diamagnetic character occurs since of the absence of unpaired electrons. Diamagnetic substances are the substances that are repelled by the magnetic field.
Mostly transition elements and their compounds are paramagnetic and are attracted by the magnetic field. Bigger the number of unpaired electrons in the substance bigger is the paramagnetic character. The magnetic character of a substance is stated in terms of magnetic moments. The magnetic moment can be computed by using the relation,
µ = √ n (n+2) BM (Bohr Magneton)
Here,n = number of unpaired electrons
