Transpiration Pull

Transpiration Pull:

The transpiration occurring via leaves causes negative pressure or tension in xylem sap that is transmitted to the root. This is termed as transpiration pull that is responsible for the movement of water column upward.

Objections and Explanation:

Air bubbles might enter the water column due to the atmospheric pressure variations. Dixon described that the water continuity is sustained by network of tracks of water due to interconnections among longitudinal vessels.

The Septa in xylem vessels might check the flow of water. However the suction force or negative tension developed by transpiration pull is adequate to overcome the resistance developed by septa.
