Reproduction in Algae

Reproduction:

Three general techniques of reproduction that is found in Algae are as follows:

1. Vegetative
2. Asexual and
3. Sexual

Vegetative reproduction:

It occurs by fragmentation or by the development of adventitious branches.

Asexual reproduction:

It occurs by means of various kinds of spores such as Aplanospores, Zoospores, and Akinetes. Zoospores are flagellated, naked, and motile. Example: Chlamydomonas Aplanospores are thin walled and non motile (example: Chlorella) Akineties are thick walled and non motile spores (example: Pithophora)

Sexual Reproduction:

The sexual reproduction includes fusion of two gametes. When fusing gametes belong to the similar thallus it is termed as homothallic and when they belong to different thalli it is heterothallic. The fusing gametes might be heterogametes or isogametes.
