Isogamy and Heterogamy

Isogamy and Heterogamy:

Isogamy:

This is the fusion of two physiologically and morphologically identical gametes example: Spirogyra and several species of Chlamydomonas.

Heterogamy:

It refers to the fusion of dissimilar gametes. This is of two kinds:

1. Anisogamy
2. Oogamy

1. Anisogamy is the fusion of two gametes that are morphologically dissimilar however physiologically identical (both motile or non-motile)

2. Oogamy refers to the fusion of gametes that are both morphologically and physiologically different. In this kind of fusion the male gamete is generally termed to as antherozoid that is generally motile and smaller in size and the female gamete that is generally non- motile and bigger in size is termed to as egg. The sex organ that generates the antherozoids is termed as antheridium and the egg is generated in oogonium. The fusion outcome of antherozoid and egg is termed as Zygote. The zygote might germinate directly after meiosis or might generate meiospores that in turn will develop.
