Substances known as fibrinolytics, like streptokinase and urokinase, can destroy thrombi (clots formed inside blood vessels, capillaries or within the heart chambers) and are employed in the treatment of obstructions of coronary arteries or other blood vessels.

Streptokinase destroys fibrin network and so it dissolves thrombotic clot. Its name comes after the bacteria which produce it, the streptococci.
