The separation of homologous chromosomes in meiosis I has two major functions: to decrease to a half the total number of chromosomes, producing haploid daughter cells at the end of process, and to make probable genetic recombination as the separation is aleatory, that is, each pair of daughter cells can be distinct from the other pair associating chromosomal combination from maternal and paternal origins. (And when crossing over is considered each of the four resultant cells can be distinct from the others.)

The separation of similar chromatids in meiosis II has similar function it has in mitosis: to detach the chromosomes already duplicated to daughter cells.
