There are different methods which are used for performance appraisal of employees:

1. Ranking Method: The oldest and simplest method of rating is ranking technique. First, each employee is match up against all others doing the same job and after that he is provided with a rank.

2. Grading Method: Different grades are developed for assessing the skill of different employees under the method of performance appraisal and then the employees are given these grades which are as follows:
(i) Excellent
(ii) Very good
(iii) Good
(iv) Average
(v) Bad
(vi) Worst

3. Man-to-Man Comparison Method: This method can be used in job evaluation. This technique has another name which is Factor Comparison Method. In performance evaluation, it is not of much use because it requires the designing of scale which is quite a difficult task.

4. Graphic Rating Scale Method of Performance Appraisal: This is the very well-liked, usual method of performance appraisal. Under this method, scales are developed for numerous reasonably precise factors.
