Whenever there is low T3 and T4 secretion through thyroid, the TSH secretion by the hypophysis is much stimulated and the TSH blood level rises. The raise in the TSH availability promotes the growth of thyroid gland. The thyroid swelling is a reaction of a tissue which tries to compensate the functional deficiency by making the gland raises its size.
