The arterial system consists of thicker muscle walls as within arteries the blood circulates beneath higher pressure. The veins are much flaccid than arteries. From the lumen to external layer both kinds of vessels are made up of endothelium, connective tissue and muscle tissue. In both, the endothelium is a single layer of cells. In arteries, the muscle tissue part is thicker than in veins and in such vessels the external connective tissue is thicker than arteries.

Arteries are pulsating blood vessels. Arterial pulse can be felt in a medical exam, for example, by the palpation of the radial artery in an internal and lateral face of the wrist close to the base of the thumb.
