If oxygen from the haemoglobin or myoglobin is not enough for the supply of   energy of the muscle cell the cell which then begins to do the lactic fermentation in an attempt to compensate the deficiency. The lactic fermentation liberates lactic acid and this substance may cause muscle fatigue and predisposes muscles to the cramps.
