The three major signs of diabetes mellitus:
All are well-known as the diabetic triad: polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia. Polyuria is the extreme elimination of urine; in diabetes it is caused by decreased water resorption in the renal tubules due to bigger osmolarity of the glomerular filtrate (caused by excessive glucose). Polydipsia is the overstated ingestion of water; the thirst is due to the too much water loss in the urine. Polyphagia is the overstated ingestion of food caused by lack in energy generation by glucose-lacking cells.
