Essay -Poetry
This is the formal assignment for Essay I. The focus of this essay is the analysis of one or more poems in The Water and Culture Reader; the analysis will foreground imagery and figurative language (itz., metaphor, simile, personification).
Your task as critical reader is to identify a salient theme in the poem(s) and discuss ways in which imagery and figurative language contribute to an appreciation of the theme, aesthetically and/or cognitively.
You may choose to write about any of the poems read and discussed in class (from our anthology-not in the class handouts).
It is understood that as an analytical essay, your discussion of the poem will be supplemented by research into the poet's biography and history, as appropriate.
Generally, the poem(s) and your discussion should address in some way nature, the environment, our place in the world, and so on.
The essay, focused and concisely written, should run about four (4) pages long and should follow MLA format requirements.
Parenthetical notes and a works cited page are required.
