Question: SOCIAL MEDIA
This week I want you to reflect on social media. I want you to look at the personal data that Facebook collects. They make it available to you in an attempt to be more transparent. So why not take a look at it? This is more of a reflection than a formal paper.
To download a copy of your Facebook data:
1. Click at the top right of any Facebook page and select Settings
2. Click Download a copy of your Facebook data below your General Account Settings
3. Click Start My Archive
Keep in mind that Facebook has measures in place to help ensure the security of your information. They require you to confirm your identity to complete the download process. You will not be able to access the information until you have completed the security check.
You can check to see whether we have your credit card information stored by clicking Settings > Payments > Payment Methods. From there, you may choose to change or delete stored credit card information.
Once you have the data, check it out. Explore what is in there.
Finally, for the assignment: describe your exploration. What did you see? What surprised you? Did anything about the exploration trouble you?
Does Facebook know you accurately? What do they have wrong/right? Why? Then more up to larger conclusions: What does your experience in this exercise suggest about life in the digital society? How does it shift your thought about how you communicate and interact online?
Your assignment should be written in complete sentences. It is more of a reflection than a thesis-based essay, so you are not expected to have an introduction, body and conclusion; but nonetheless, it should have good structure, and where you draw on others' ideas, you should cite them using citations or hyperlinks.
