You have to find the three most suitable locations for an anshore windfarm in the Bristol, based on the Baban & Parry method (there is an article attached below). The Babab & Parry method is about making maps with a software called 'arcGIS' and 'arcCatalog'. The full instructions of how to use the software are attached below. Also you will need a given database in order to work in arcGIS. The database is also attached below. The report must contain the maps you have produced form arcGIS, introduction, methodology, results, conclusions, recommendations and references (please have a look on the intruction file below). Report must be no more than 1300 words. The maps should be coloured and A3 sized. No more than four maps are allowed in the report.

1. Create a new folder on the D: drive of the machine you are working on that is identifiable as containing your work, I suggest using your initials followed by an underscore and 'GIS' e.g. MH_GIS

2. Use the 'Move folder' app on the desktop to copy the folder called Basedata from S:/FET/SUPPORT/MAPS/WINDFARMS to the folder you created in Step 1.

3. Using Windows Explorer open the folder you just created, and saved the base datasets in,  answer the following questions:

How many files are in this folder?

How many sub-folders?

4. Now open ArcCatalog. Click 'Start', 'Programs', 'ArcGIS' and 'ArcCatalog'. Navigate to the same folder. If you cannot see the folder, click the icon that looks like a black cross on a yellow folder (Connect to Folder). In the next window, navigate to the folder you are interested in, and click 'OK'.

How many items are listed in the folder? _________________________

The difference between the two views is that ArcCatalog presents and manages the component files of a spatial data source as a single spatial dataset. Because of its intelligent handling of spatial data, always use ArcCatalog to manage your spatial datasets.

5. At the end of each practical, you must use the 'Move  folder' app to move your working folder (the one you creates in Step 1) onto the H:\ drive which is a secure network space which is regularly backed up. At the start of the next session move it back and continue working. It would be sensible to also keep an up-to-date copy of your GIS folder on a removable USB drive.
