Topic - Psychological impacts of racism
Topic Paper
In a 1,500-word essay (6-7 pages double-spaced) outline a key issue of interest in relation to the topic you have selected. Your work should be written in essay style (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion).
The use of headings to structure your work is strongly encouraged. You can use the suggested structure below to construct your essay (note, these are not suggested headings).
(1) Introduce the topic
- Provide a summary of the topic (you selected) in general (i.e., what did you gather after reading and listening to the information). This would be an appropriate place to make use of the resources I provided (i.e., commentary and citation).
- Indicate the focus of your essay (i.e., what aspect have you decided to expand on)
- Indicate why you have selected this focal point (what is its relevance or significance; it can be personal or you can connect its relevance back to course content)
- Indicate what you would like to say (i.e., a thesis statement). In simpler terms, what is the point of your essay (e.g., to explain, to demonstrate, ... to highlight a connection, to problematize, to critique...).
- Outline your main points or arguments as a road map
(2) Supporting content (body paragraphs)
- Provide sufficient description of the points you would like to raise; it is common in an essay to have at least three primary points to discuss
- Properly credit the resources you have consulted (citations)
(3) Concluding remarks
- Re-state the point of your essay (thesis)
- Summarize the supporting points/arguments
- Answer the following question: How have your views on mental distress been influenced by exploring this topic (what were your views before and what are they now). Be specific and give examples.
- Outlines some challenges or questions that remain and/or provide some recommendations as it pertains to the topic you have explored.
