You are a social researcher who has been contacted by the newly formed NSW Department of Social Equality.  The new Department Head is confused about their role and the mission of the department, and wants you to explain what social inequality is and how we can find out about it.

You need to write a brief which does three things:

  • Explain what social inequality means in a sociological sense;
  • Analyse how different forms of inequality intersect and interact to impact people differently, using at least two examples from this course (class, gender, race or crime); and
  • Design a research project based on this topic which allows you to research what you consider to be the most important issue relating to inequality in NSW. (Do not include a research budget).

You are STRONGLY advised to tackle these three things as separate, but interrelated sections of your paper.  So, explain the context of the research and then explain how you would conduct a research project about it.

Word length: 1500 words, NOT including references.

Research/ sources to use:  As this is an EXAM, you are NOT required to use any of sources beyond those you used throughout this course.  Suggested resources include:

  • the textbook
  • the weekly readings (NB: NO emails will be answered if the links to the weekly readings do not work. All of the information is there, and you can find them through the library)
  • websites such as the ABS
  • lecture notes
  • tutorial notes
  • reading notes

Referencing:  Use standard in-text referencing as per the rest of the assessments this semester.  Marks will be deducted for incorrect referencing.
