Writing Prompt: (PR,SR) One common suggestion for improving the bureaucracy is to encourage whistle blowing. Select one of the U.S. Government employees from the list below who acted as a whistle blower. Describe the issues and consequences associated with this government employee’s whistle blowing activities. Specifically, you should:
1. Identify and explain in what capacity he or she (or they) worked for the U.S. government, explain what actions he or she (or they) took,
2. Explain the employee’s (or employees’) rationale behind blowing the whistle,
3. Explain the position of the federal government. [How did the government see his or her (or
4. Place yourself in the position of the government employee(s). What would you do, if while working for the federal government, you came to question the legality or ethics of the work you did? What specific actions would you take? *
5. Identify what protections you have if you come forward.
6. Explain and justify YOUR decision. *
You should not just list answers to these questions in a 1, 2, 3, ..., 6 fashion. You should integrate your answers to these questions in a cogent, thesis-controlled essay.
In your essay, answer numbers 4, 5, and 6 without using the 1st person voice. Use 3rd person voice. This may be a challenge for some writers, particularly given the way in which the questions are phrased. [One possible approach is to write, in 3rd person voice, about how an ethically responsible person should act in such situations.]
Your essay should be well-written, cogent, and thorough yet concise. You MAY use any sources you like to investigate the “whistle-blower” you’ve selected. You should cite any sources that you use in writing your essay. Use any citation style you prefer, but be consistent throughout.
