Rogerian / Problem-solving Argument
In a Rogerian argument (named for psychologist Carl Rogers), or a problem-solving argument, your task is to "win" by building common ground between two positions, rather than simply establishing the superiority of one position over another. This is a powerful format with applications in professional, interpersonal, and intercultural communication.
Choose your topic for this assignment carefully. Rogerian argument format is based on Carl Rogers' work with active, empathic listening as a negotiation and therapeutic technique. It's a strong choice when you need to persuade an apathetic (or hostile) audience to take positive action, to establish (or improve) a working relationship, or establish common ground between equally-strong arguments. A good topic for this essay may have many sides, any (or all!) of which could be good solutions to the problem(s) you pose in your thesis.
Rogerian argumentation places a premium on polite, informed discussion. As in a classical argument, you need to demonstrate that you understand both your opponent's position and your own well enough to clearly see their strengths and weaknesses and that you value their position enough to want to collaborate equally on future actions. Your topic needs at least two contrasting sides, and you must be able to discuss and synthesize these contrasting views knowledgably, without bias.
Rogerian Argument
Find at least five sources for this assignment, using the same resources as you did for your earlier assignments. Remember the minimum source requirements for this assignment:
- You must use only strong, credible sources from peer-reviewed academic journals.
- Your sources must include presentation and analysis of data, collected by scientific method (either by the researchers, or as a meta-analysis of data collected by other researchers).
- Your sources must be relatively recent (published within the last five years).
- Tertiary sources (such as encyclopedias) and less credible sources (such as sources written by journalists or other non-experts, rather than sources written by experts) don't count toward your required sources. However, you may include them as sources of additional proofs.
Build more than five sources into this assignment.
Hint: You do not need to use all (or even any) of the sources from your earlier assignments in this assignment.

• Write a 4-5 page essay that follows the Rogerian, problem-solving argument organization pattern we've discussed in class. In your argument, be sure to
- Begin with a strong, interesting thesis that forecasts the structure of your essay
- End with a strong, interesting conclusion that motivates your audience to act (and/or to collaborate with you)
- Incorporate your source materials (using summary, paraphrase, and quotes), and cite your sources thoroughly
Hint: You could also make a Rogerian / problem-solving argument using a delayedthesis form, in which you pose a question or describe a problem as the opening move in your argument (instead of stating a formal claim, as in a Classical argument) and then build toward a final recommendation in your conclusion.
That structure is very useful in cases where the topic - or the solutions - are controversial. If you know that your readers are likely to resist your solution, the delayed-thesis form allows you some "room" to persuade them slowly.
Be careful, though: you still need to forecast the overall flow of your argument from the beginning. Yes, you're waiting until the end for "the big reveal" of your main point; however, your readers still need to know, from the beginning, the question or problem you're trying to address, and you need to clearly communicate that your argument is heading toward a solution.
