Rhetorical Analysis
Rhetoric is a part of argument in that we use rhetoric to further our goals. For me, I see rhetoric the most clearly twice a year: Election season and during the Superbowl.

Politicians use rhetoric to try and sell their platform to you, the voters. Companies use expensive ads during the Superbowl to persuade a large demographic audience to buy their product.

Fortunately, I am not going to make anyone rhetorically analyze a political speech. Instead, I want you to pick an ad and analyze how the writers and actors in the show tried to argue that their brand is the best. You must dissect not only the words but also the actions, the effects, and the actors themselves to determine the messages-both intentional and unintentional-that come across. We will talk about this in class.

Because ads are an electronic medium, each paper needs to include a summary of the ad itself. Describe what is happening in the ad. Do not go into too much detail; just describe the ad so that when you dissect the ad later your audience has a point of reference. When you finish the summary, consider the intended audience of the rhetoric. A great deal of rhetoric depends on audience-who is the ad targeting? And, perhaps more importantly, who is the ad excluding?

After describing the ad and considering its intended audience, explain why or why not you think this ad is successful. Maybe it contains too many stereotypes or is offensive; maybe it's impossible to tell what the producers are trying to sell; maybe the rhetoric is ineffective. One of the most important aspects of rhetoric is audience. Successful ads will convince their audience that their product is worth purchasing, but they will also endear their parent company to the audience and limit offending viewers. Also consider implicit and explicit messaging. What is the ad attempting to make explicit, and what is said implicitly? Consider the ad JC Penny's ran a few years ago, where for Mother's Day and Father's Day ads were run with homosexual parents on the cover. Explicitly, the ad was promoting sales for the holiday, but implicitly, JC Penny was supporting gay marriages.

Do not use this paper to express your own feelings about the ad; I'm not looking for a personal opinion or a reaction piece; I want you to evaluate the rhetoric used in the ads. I hate first and second person pronouns in professional writing, and I will mark you down for it! Instead, step back from the ad and think through different perspectives: How might women feel about this? How might people of a different race or ethnicity feel about this? Would a vegetarian like this ad? Is the ad focused on young people, or are they trying to reach the elderly? Explain why or why not specific discourse communities would like the ad, or not like the ad. State definitely whether the ad is successful or not; do not use hedges like "I think," "In my opinion," or "I believe."

Criteria:
• 3-5 pages, double spaced
• MLA Format
• Clear thesis statement in a larger introductory paragraph
• Strong, non-repetitive summary that focuses on key points and important details
• Identify the intended audience for this advertisement
• Identify implicit and explicit messages in the advertisement
• Discuss ways in which the ad is designed to appeal to its intended audience
• Conclusion paragraph that reiterates thesis statement and effectively sums up argument

Be Aware of the Following (as you will be marked down for them):
• Contractions (aren't, isn't)
• 2nd person pronouns (you, your)
• 1st person pronouns (I, me, we)
• Hedges (I think, in my opinion, I believe)
