Environmental Scan: Porter's Five Forces
Development of an effective strategy requires a complete competitive analysis that details the state of competition within the industry in which the company is operating. Porter (1979) proposed that the competitive situation within an industry is determined by five distinct forces:
• The intensity of rivalry in a marketplace or industry.
• The bargaining power of buyers in the industry.
• The bargaining power of suppliers.
• Exit and entry barriers to the industry itself.
• Substitute products available to consumers and the exposure the company experiences should customers switch to substitute products.
