Outcrop-scale observations are more detailed than what can be communicated on regional maps. In many cases, it isthese mesoscale structures that are used to interpret the tectonic history of regional-scale structures. What structuresare present at the mesoscale, how they overprint, and how they are related to the spatial distribution of rock types areall important in working out the deformation history of an area. Microscale investigation of samples selectedstrategically from the outcrop provide supporting information for the interpretation of the mesoscale deformationhistory, helping to support or refute hypotheses of how structures formed and changed over time. Microscaleinvestigations could include a description of microstructures, mineral-scale geochronologic analysis, micro-scaleproxies for the calculation of deformation condition (stress, strain rate, temperature, etc.), or evidence for the activityof certain flow-related deformation mechanisms.
