  • How can organizations foster a culture of open dialogue to preemptively address conflicts before they affect workplace harmony and productivity?

Instructions:

The goal of the discussions is to have a robust, informative, and reflective interaction about course topics. Learning is directly related to effort put forth toward discussion engagement and participation. In order to encourage active and quality participation that adds value and increases learning, the grade you earn will be higher as your participation and quality of content increases. Please post at least two substantive replies to classmates or your instructor for full credit consideration.

You are expected to participate during the current week's discussion. Contact your instructor in cases of emergency or uncontrollable circumstances.

Question 2: Identify one of the many challenges/issues faced in middle adulthood. (e.g. health issues, stress, divorce, care-giving, empty nest etc.) and create a toolbox of at least 5 tools for addressing the challenge/issues. Need Assignment Help?

Question 3: Choose ONE of the five topics and answer the questions posed for the topic. Each topic and related question should be addressed in the discussion.  If you are posting and a topic is not addressed, you should discuss that topic. Try to keep the coverage of topics evenly distributed, so that each topic has an equal number of threads.  This means that a class with 25 students will have each topic discussed 5 times.  A class with 30 students will be 6 times each.

Failing to do so may result in the students posting last having to revise and repost.

When posting, identify the topic # in the subject line so classmates can more easily determine what has already been discussed.

Topic 1: Types of Groups

Discuss the differences between formal and informal groups. What are some reasons people join informal groups?

  • Share an example of a formal group you have been part of and describe its structure.
  • Discuss an informal group you belong to and explain why you joined it.

Topic 2: Group Roles and Cohesiveness

What are the three primary ways of classifying group roles (group task roles, group maintenance roles, self-interest roles)? How do these roles impact group cohesiveness?

  • Provide an example of a group task role and a group maintenance role you have observed.
  • How can self-interest roles negatively affect group cohesiveness?

Topic 3: Stages of Group Formation

Explain the stages of group formation (Forming, Redefining, Coordinating, Formalizing, and Dissolving). How do these stages contribute to the development of a successful group?

  • Share an experience where you observed a group going through these stages.
  • Discuss the challenges a group might face during the redefining (storming) stage.

Topic 4: Groupthink and the Abilene Paradox

What is groupthink, and how can it undermine the effectiveness of a group? How does the Abilene Paradox differ from groupthink?

  • Provide an example of a situation where groupthink affected a decision-making process.
  • Discuss strategies to avoid the Abilene Paradox in group settings.

Topic 5: Teams vs. Groups

Compare and contrast teams and groups. How does teamwork enhance the effectiveness of achieving specific tasks?

  • Share an example of a successful team you have been part of and describe the dynamics that contributed to its success.
  • How can understanding ego states (Parent, Adult, Child) improve team management and leadership?

Question 4:

This week has focused on customer service, guest relations, and human interaction in the hospitality experience. Everyone has a different set of expectations going into any situation, based on past experience and their own preferences. It is not always easy to anticipate guest needs and desires and aim to exceed their expectations.

For this discussion, provide an example of a time when you were pleasantly surprised by your interactions with someone in the hospitality industry - where they may have exceeded your expectations, dealt with a problem well, or just in general improved your mood.

Then, provide an example of a time you received not-so-great service and what that meant in terms of whether or not you would ever return to that place of business. Explain how this poor situation could have been handled better - perhaps in a way that would have made you give the establishment a second chance or even a recommendation.

Question 5:

Connection, communication, and cueresponsiveness. Spotlight on the 3 C's, to discuss how you would help young children to develop the skills of connection, communication and cue responsiveness.

Question 6:

For this discussion, imagine you are 85 years old faced with one of the following circumstances: Living in NYC on/near the date of September 11, 2001 (September 11th Terror Attacks), living in New Orleans on/near the date of August 28, 2005 (Hurricane Katrina), or living alone during the COVID-19 outbreak and quarantine. In any of these cases, you are a frail elder who doesn't own a car. What special challenges would you have faced on those days? You only need to select one circumstance, but can choose more than one if you wish.

Question 7:

Select three careers in Psychology that interest you with varying requirements and levels of education.  Do not select the same three as you did in the Week 1 Forum. What level of education is required for this career? How would someone prepare to have a career in each of these areas? Do they require licensure, if so what are the licensure requirements?

If you know of anyone in one of these careers, conduct an informational interview with that psychology professional. Feel free to share here information that you learned from this interview. If you decide to share, do not use their full name or any identifying information about this person.
