Essay Problem

Part 1

Write a 5 pages (1,250 to 1,500 words) on either topic #1, or on topic 2a, 2b, or 2c, below. The best papers for this project will include not only an expository component, but will make use of the best relevant scholarship in order to enhance whatever argument your essay is making.

Part 2

Need to write the thesis and outline first

In a 4 pages essay, (1100 to 1300 words) argue that stereotype threats or other contingencies involved in your identity have impacted you and explain how you navigate them. (These threats may be in the past or ones that you are currently facing.) You may compare your experience to one that Steele offers to help your readers better understand your identity. Conclude by explaining how Steele's research illuminates your feelings, performance, and/or perceptions regarding your identity and/or suggest changes that should be made regarding your stereotype threat.

The argument you are promoting here is that stereotype threat DOES have an impact that is underestimated, ignored or misunderstood. Therefore, the good portion of your essay should be demonstrating how you personally experienced it and how those experiences connect to Steele's research, which validates your argument. Do not include body paragraphs or your introduction discussing how you overcame it or how it no longer affects you. The conclusion is an option for that type of discussion.

The response should include a reference list. Using one-inch margins, Times New Roman 12 pnt font, double-space and APA style of writing and citations.
