Respond to classmate's discussion question in 80 words. Confidentiality, especially in the current social climate, is a code of ethics that I strive to uphold with every client I serve. Most of my ethics training comes from organizations such as the National Association of Social Workers and ViaHope in Texas. I work as an Intensive Case Manager for an unhoused initiative, and my role is to help house individuals who have been without a home for over 12 months and have a proven disability. To qualify my clients, I often have to involve other agencies and, sometimes, local businesses. It gets tricky; however, I've become quite familiar with section 1.07 of the NASW Code of Ethics, which guides me to protect client privacy while disclosing only the minimum information necessary to provide services. I do see many challenges in the social service arena here in El Paso. Many of my colleagues are passionate about helping this population, and there are times when too much is shared in advocating for the client. Another challenge is that many clients already carry profound mistrust due to past interactions with institutions, and repeatedly asking them to share personal details can feel intrusive or retraumatizing. I strive to explain why I'm asking for specific information, which it will be shared with, and how it will be used.
I believe that if all social services in my city used the same system to document data, it would reduce confidential information sharing and strengthen ethical compliance among agencies.
