Final Essay: Susan Glaspell, "Trifles"
Assignment: Using the handout, "The Cult of Domesticity and True Womanhood," please write an essay that shows how nineteenth-century ideas about gender help us understand the events that take place in the play. Your essay should answer the question: Why is it difficult for the men in the play (the County Attorney and the sheriff) to solve the murder of Mr. Wright? Your response to this question should be answered in terms of gender.
Requirements:
1. Give your essay a title.
2. Make sure you have clear thesis that connects ideas from the handout to the play, and make sure your thesis answers the main question stated above.
3. The paper should be written using MLA style, as we've done in all previous papers.
4. Right after the introduction, you should have a paragraph that defines what gender means in the nineteenth century. You should stress ideas that you think are most relevant to your thesis.
5. The paper should be 305 pages long.
