Choose any work of art and analyze it. First, in terms of its formal qualities; look for the elements of design and the way they are organized into the composition. Then, in terms of any iconography you can see. What role might this piece have played in the context in which it was originally made?
The purpose of this essay is a formal analysis, meaning just the observable facts based on the visual elements and design principles. A good way to do this is to look at the work and see what draws your eye first. Look away, and then back. Where do you look now? It is always the artist's job to catch the attention of the viewer and lead them through the composition. By trying to notice the order in which we observe a work it may give insight into what devices the artist used to lead us through the composition.
