Historiographical Essay Guidelines

The historiographical essay, or literature review, is a discussion of the written discourse, or conversation, around a given subject, question, or theme. It is essentially a comparative essay, wherein you compare and contrast the respective treatments of a specific subject, question, or theme. It can be broad, focusing on many texts, or narrow, going deeply into one idea in just a few texts. It is typically about 30-35pp long.

For your essay, write a mini-historiographical essay. Select a key theme, for example, a moment, idea, organization, strategy, individual, or institution. Then select three texts that address your selection and compare and contrast what the three authors write about it. For example, you might consider the 3 portrayals of Ella Baker in Ransby, Carson, and Martinez. Or you might consider the way those same authors discuss SNCC. Or you might consider the ways in which Newton, X, and King discuss Black Power.

Speak to me (after class or during office hours, which are noted on the syllabus) or email me (my email address is on the syllabus) and let me know your central theme and the 3 texts with which you planto work.

Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:

1. The answer should be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.

2. The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.

3. Also include a reference page. The Citations and references should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
