Problem:

As an outreach worker at Indigo I had been working with Sam for several months. Sam is a 15 year old boy who has been coming in regularly to our sessions after his parents had expressed concerns about his increasing isolation at school. Sam had always been a reserved and quiet young boy. As he entered the centre last night, he appeared even more withdrawn than usual. His head was down and he avoided making eye contact with me. I knew I had to pay extra attention to him. After a while, we sat down to talk but Sam's discomfort was evident. He fidgeted in his seat and nervously clicked his pen. Halfway through our conversation, Sam took off his jumper and I noticed fresh red marks and scars on his forearms. It was apparent he had been engaging in self-harming behaviour. One of the cuts was particularly deep and appeared to require medical attention. My immediate concern was for his well-being. I attempted to remain calm and supportive. I expressed my concerns and reassured Sam that this was a safe space for him to discuss how he was feeling. Sam was hesitant but nodded his head. Indicating that he was willing to open up. I could sense his trust in me, and it was important to handle this situation sensitively. Sam shared that he was experiencing stress at school. This was due to an overwhelming pressure to improve his academics. Sam had resorted to self-harm to cope with this emotional pain. His parents had also recently separated. This left him feeling anxious about changes and uncertainties in his home life. Sam explained that he wasn't experiencing suicidal thoughts or ideation. However, he expressed he was feeling trapped and desperate, seeking release through self-harm. I reassured Sam that he had made the right decision by confiding in me and that I was there to support him. As we continued our conversation, it was clear that Sam didn't pose a danger to others. But I was deeply concerned about his safety.
