The Glass Menagerie: One-Page Response 1

Throughout our study of Tennessee Williams's play, you will be asked to write a one-page response to the reading and selected topics. These "one-pagers" are similar to the kinds of writing you'll be expected to do often when in college.

REQUIREMENTS:

- Must be one full page in length, double-spaced (this doesn't mean almost one page). If you have space left at the bottom of the page or if you put lots of arbitrary spaces between paragraphs, you'll lose points.

- Make sure you answer the question or the prompt and all of its components. If there are multiple questions, answer them all.

- Do your best to convey details through showing, not telling. A portion of your grade will be based on your use of textual evidence and correctly citing your work page #).

- You will need to explain your quotations and why that quote is important for your argument.

- You must give each "one-pager" a unique, creative title (think like you did for your Romanticism Soundtrack). If you call it "one-pager" or some derivative, you'll lose points.

- Sometimes you will have time to start these in class. If you fail to finish in class, they should be finished as homework.

- Submit your "one-pagers" to the Dropbox Assignment Folder by the assigned time.

Glass Menagerie Response #1

Please finish reading Scene 3-5 before responding. Remember to quote the text to support your opinion. Your response must be typed and should be at least a page in length (double-spaced, 12-point font).

Key themes in this play circle around ideas relating to abandonment, memory, illusions and dreams, and escape.

Write about the development of ONE of these themes over the course of these three scenes. Which character seems most closely tied with your chosen theme? Explore what the character's relationships, traits, motivations, and fears reveal about your chosen theme.

Glass Menagerie Response #2

Please finish reading Scene 6-7 before responding. Also, you may need to look back to Tom's opening speech in Scene 1. Remember to quote the text to support your opinion. Your response must be typed and should be at least a page in length (double-spaced, 12-point font).

Consider the stage conventions (the screen, the lighting, the use of memory, the music) Williams uses throughout the play. What do you think Williams's intentions were for presenting the play in this manner? Consider what these conventions would add to a live production. Looking back on the play as a whole, you think he was successful in what he intended to do? Do you think these conventions supported the development of theme? Explain.
