The World's first television commercial was a ten-second Bulova watch ad broadcast in 1941. But it wasn't until the 1950's, when tv became a mass medium, that the commercial became a ubiquitous features of popular culture. Before reviews had the technology to fast forward through commercials, many probably regarded tv ads as annoying, occasionally informative or entertaining, but generally unnecessary accompaniments to their television experience. But of course, the commercial is not simply an extraneous byproduct of TV programming. It is television's very reason for existence. Before the age of public tv and of cable and satellite providers, television programs were financed entirely by the companies.
