Introduction
Although you will not be submitting a rough draft for each and every paper, it is important to know the process. For this first essay, you will be turning in a rough draft and then a revised/final copy. During the rough draft stage, you should focus on exploring ideas, filling in the details to support them, and discovering your purpose.
Activity Instructions
Write a summary essay of Mike Rose's essay titled "Blue-Collar Brilliance". The summary should be shorter than Rose's essay, but should be long enough to present all of the main points that you found significant as a reader (approximately 1-2 pages in length). Remember that your purpose for writing this summary is to provide a condensed description of Mike Rose's overall argument, using the main points that you found important as a reader. You want to write this summary from the perspective of explaining Rose's overall argument and main points to someone who has not yet read the essay. Ask yourself as you draft: "Can my audience understand what Rose was arguing from my summary alone?"
