Research Paper Instructions
This is your opportunity to delve into, reflect on, and report on a topic in management. You will conduct research; evaluate your research, and prepare a written research paper for submission. I hope you will view the assignment as an opportunity to discover the value of research in developing an understanding of a topic in management that interests you. If you choose a topic you care about, it will show.
Assignment Guidelines - Part A
Part 1: Choose a leadership or management person/organization. It may be:
- A writer, speaker, thinker who has had significant influence on organizational/management thinking and how their work relates to management theory and practice. Examples include: Peter Drucker, Peter Senge, Edward Demming, Henry Mintzberg, etc.
- A business leader who has had significant influence on people and their thinking and how their leadership style has shaped and influence leadership and/or management practice. Examples include Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Tim Cook (CEO Apple), Jeff Bezos (CEO Amazon), etc.
- A firm or organization and a specific aspect of the respective organization. Examplesinclude: Wal-Mart, Safeway, Canadian Tire, McDonalds, Bank of Montreal, West Jet, etc.
Part 2: Search for resources regarding your topic; you will need at least (minimum) three sources other than the textbook. Possible sources include business journals, management books, on-line educational materials and/or relevant primary and/or secondary sources.If you cannot find adequate sources of information, you may need to change your topic, however, maintain an "open mind" as you may find your research leads in another direction. If your topic bores you at this point, please do yourself and us all a favor, and start over at step #1. Sources such as Wikipedia & Investopedia are not acceptable for obvious reasons.
Part 3: In summary, you will:
- Start with a 1- 2 paragraph justification of your research topic
- Design 2 - 3 research statements/questions(thesis) about your topic.
Example: Michael Jordan
o What key factors contributed to Jordan's success in business?
o What was Michael's Management Style?
o How did Jordan evolve from technical skills (basketball) to building andleading diverse business interests?
- Identify and evaluate 3 or more research sources appropriate to your topic.
- Research the Person or Company's background. Relevant subsections of your paper could include: Origin, Inspiration, Values, Evolution, Culture, Structure, Strengths, Weaknesses, Controversies, Achievements, Legacy.
Part 4: It is strongly advised that you confirm your topic with your instructor early in the process.
