Students are required to write a 4-6 pages paper on an artwork they have viewed and analyzed at one of the various Houston art museums- (1) Museum of Fine Arts Houston, 2)Contemporary Arts Museum and 3) Menil Collection.
Choose from among the following media 1) Sculpture, 2) Painting; 3) Prints 4) Photography; 5) Drawing, 6) Architecture, 7) Decorative Arts
And time periods: 1) Prehistoric/Ancient/Medieval 2) Renaissance/Baroque/19th century; 3) Modern/Contemporary;4) Non-western (Africa; Asia; Pre-Columbian).
I. Research the artist's biography and stylistic movement, and place the artwork within a brief cultural context (three-five paragraphs). Use MLA citations and Works Cited at end of Word.doc.
II. In three to five paragraphs analyze the object in terms of the formal elements and the principles of design (chapters 4-8). Use the attached Museum Assignment worksheet as a guide in taking notes at the museum.
