As in a traditional, onsite classroom, an instructional analysis is useful for identifying characteristics that learners bring to the online classroom environment. Online learners, or students, possess varied characteristics, backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and educational goals that may influence their learning.
Online learners may also hold different expectations about their online courses and instructors that may influence their satisfaction with the online classroom environment.
Furthermore, online learners may have a range of prior educational experience with independent and collaborative learning activities-hallmarks of online learning environments-that may affect their online experience.
