Assignment
The assignment is to write a 3,000/4,000-word (10 to 12 double-spaced pages) essay that focuses on the experiences of a participant, supporter, or close observer of the African-American freedom struggle.
The essay should employ a significant number of primary sources (such as newspapers and magazines, government documents, and oral history interviews), including a core source selected from the list of memoirs and contemporary first-person accounts listed below.
Linking biography and history, and text and context, the essay should attempt to reconstruct and interpret individual experience and perspective in a meaningful and analytically powerful way.
The essay should be documented using endnotes or footnotes formatted according to the rules presented in the University of Chicago Manual of Style (summarized in Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 8th Edition, 2013).
