Write a 1,500-word essay (6 double-spaced pages) that answers a broad thematic question or discusses a complex aesthetic topic by comparing two or more works. Students may analyze works from any unit of the course, and may thus compare a lyric poem to a novel or a dramatic comedy to a short story, etc
Essays should demonstrate correct usage of the conventions of MLA style. As a general rule, references to frequently-cited sources may be given in parentheses in the text of the essay, e.g. (Steinbeck 242). Where relevant, students should also append an alphabetical list of "Work Cited," following standard bibliographical format:
Discuss the ways in which authors, narrators, speakers, and / or characters in two or more works represent the forms and functions of writing and reading. Are writing and reading a physical, a mental, an emotional, or a metaphorical activity? What role does "the official lingo" (in Paul Chowder's words) play in the production and appreciation of literature? How is reading related to writing, and vice-versa?
